How chat works

Each buyer has one chat per item. Chat in Chats, send text and photos, and share your number only if you both agree.

Updated 2 min read

Chat is where buyers and sellers talk. There is one chat for each buyer and each item. Open Chats to see them all. Your phone number and email stay hidden unless you both choose to share.

Start and find chats

  • A chat starts when a buyer taps Chat on an item. Chatting again about the same item opens the same chat.
  • On the website, Chats is in the top bar. On the app, it is a tab at the bottom.
  • The list is split into Buying and Selling. A dot shows a new message.

What you can send

Links and email addresses are not allowed in chat. If you type a phone number, the other person sees it hidden until you both agree to share.

Share your number

  1. Open the chat menu and tap Share my number.
  2. Confirm. The other person sees your number only after they share theirs with you too.
  3. To stop, open the menu and tap Stop sharing my number.

The chat menu

Open the menu (the three dots) for:

  • See the item
  • Share my number or Stop sharing my number
  • Archive this chat, or Move back to chats
  • Report this chat
  • Block the person

Warnings in a chat

Zellany shows a warning when a message mentions things like a deposit first, an e-wallet or bank transfer first, a courier fee, a payment screenshot or moving to another app. The warning is for both people. It does not block the message. Read How to spot a scam.

Notes from Zellany

Official notices from Zellany look different from messages from a person.

Tip

Say the item, the price and the place in the chat. It is easy to check later if you need to.
