Videos and data: Save data

Turn on Save data to see a picture and a play button instead of videos that play by themselves. It uses less data.

Updated 2 min read

Turn on Save data and videos show a picture with a play button. Nothing plays until you tap. Videos use the smaller copy. This saves mobile data.

Turn it on

  • On the app: open Me, then Settings, then Save data. On the app this switch shows only while videos are switched on.
  • On the website: open Settings in your picture menu and switch Save data on. The switch is also in the footer.

What it changes

  • Videos do not play by themselves in lists or in the Videos feed.
  • Videos use the 480p copy.
  • Big pictures and moving banners are off.
  • Stickers on videos show still.
  • On the app, departments show icons instead of pictures.

Tap a video to play it. You can still turn sound on.

Other things that stop autoplay

  • Reduce motion.
  • No internet connection.
  • The app in the background.
  • Scrolling fast.

About HD

On a phone, videos use the smaller copy by default. A HD choice is in the More menu of a video. It never works with Save data on.

Good to know

  • The setting is kept on that phone or browser only.
  • On the website, it starts from your browser's own Save-Data setting until you choose.

Tip

Videos in lists are small, quiet previews. With Save data on, you only use data for videos you choose to play.
